The concept of a mechanical advisor capable of asking and answering questions is both historically intriguing and technologically complex. While the idea has ancient roots, practical implementation only became feasible with recent technological advancements. The earliest machine capable of processing input data was the differential engine, an advanced calculation device conceived by Charles Babbage in 1822; however, Babbage never completed its construction. Importantly, this device was not an advisor in the modern sense, as it lacked decision-making capabilities.

The early conceptualization of advisory machines can be traced to 1832, with the introduction of devices such as the homeoscope, ideoscope, and comparator. These machines could perform data searches and support decision-making processes by processing data input via perforated cards.

Nevertheless, the entertainment application of artificial advisors emerged prominently in the 1950s amidst the rise of television and cinema. During this period, efforts were made to develop interactive devices within the context of film entertainment. In 1955, Leonard D. Bullock and John V. Sparks developed the FilmBSEM-I—an early machine containing approximately 100 vacuum tubes, capable of performing one search operation per second. Weighing around 1,000 pounds and consuming approximately 1 kW of power, it represented a significant technological achievement for its time. A key challenge was programming the machine to pose appropriate questions and evaluate user guesses effectively—a problem addressed with assistance from cinemas in Illinois.

By 1957, the device had been refined and renamed Filmillion, ultimately being installed in a cinema for public interaction. For a modest fee, movie enthusiasts could engage with the machine as it attempted to guess the film they had in mind. Despite initial interest, the commercial success fell short of expectations, leading to the machine's dismantling. Nonetheless, this chapter did not mark the end of its legacy.

In 2012, a passionate group of movie fans and computer enthusiasts revived the concept by reconstructing a modern version of Filmillion. While building a physical 1,000-pound replica was an appealing project, advances in digital technology allowed for a more practical approach—creating a pixel-based simulation that drastically reduced costs. The result is a digitally rendered representation of Filmillion—in all its nostalgic glory—now operational once again.
